OptOutside iNaturalist BioBlitz ~ Abbott's Mill Nature Center

#OptOutside this holiday weekend at Abbott's Mill with the iNaturalist app to help us document as much flora and fauna as possible. This is a self-guided free event is open to all ages. Participants must download the iNaturalist app and create a user profile to document "Research Grade" findings. Prizes will be awarded to the Top 3 "Observers" on the app from Friday, Nov 26 - Sunday, Nov 28.

The Abbott's Visitor Center will be closed over the holiday weekend, but the trails will remain open everyday from dawn - dusk. Abbott's Mill is protected as a State Nature Preserve, please take only pictures and leave only footprints.

The Great Backyard Bird Count: Kent County Tour ~ Abbott's Mill Nature Center

Join DelNature guides on a winter birding excursion as we explore protected wildlife areas along Kent County's coastline. Tally birds using the EBird app for the Great Backyard Bird Count, an annual global birding event led by Cornell Lab of Ornithology & National Audubon Society. The Great Backyard Bird Count Weekend: Kent County Tour ~ Ashland Nature Center

Visit the Delaware Bayshore in Kent County to find and tally birds for the annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC).  Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, Little Creek Wildlife Area and other stops are some of the best birding locations in the mid-Atlantic region for seeing ducks, eagles, other raptors, and thousands of Snow Geese. We will show you how to use the ebird app as part of the GBBC so that you can contribute on your own during the next few days of this international bird event. Pack a bagged lunch. Naturalist Club ~ Virtual

Summer is here, so why not get the most out of the outdoors and become a better naturalist with Delaware Nature Society experts. The Advanced Naturalist Club summer version, features 6 zoom lectures and 2 field trips to get you primed for the outdoors this season. Expand your understanding of nature and enjoy some time in the field with fellow naturalists. Lectures will focus on migratory shorebirds, summer wildflowers, history of the Wilmington Riverfront, butterflies, Delaware's endangered birds, and invasive Snakehead fish, and a report on the health of Rocky Run. Ainsworth Abbott's Historic Grist Mill Tours ~ Abbott's Mill Nature Center

Enjoy a guided tour through Southern Delaware's cultural history while exploring turn of the century engineering with a seasoned mechanic.

Ainsworth Abbott's historic grist mill underwent major repairs this winter and has now been cleared for reopening. We are resuming our monthly Guided Mill Tours on the 3rd Saturday of each month, March thru November 2021. The Mill’s restored 1919 Fairbanks Morse light-diesel engine will also be running as a part of the tour. 

Tours are limited to 6 people max from one individual household. Masks will be required to be worn by all participants and staff while inside the Mill. 

No walk-ins, pre-registration required.

Invasive Species Identification, Biology, and Control

Invasive plant species degrade local ecosystems dramatically, decreasing space for native plants, reducing insect populations, and greatly impact forests in our region. Learn how to identify problematic species, understand what they do in the environment, and how to get them under control. A zoom lecture will introduce you to many species of concern, and a follow up field trip will take you on a walk at Ashland to see these species and demonstrate how to control them on your property.

In Winter, insects and other creatures can be out and about as a normal part of their lives. Learn about the insects that come out in winter, and the variety of life that is normally active at this time of year. In this two-part program, enjoy a lecture by Jim White, Senior Fellow for Land and Biodiversity, as he explores the small wonders of winter, from insects to amphibians.
