Help raise our new egg-layers for the Spring 2022 season! Applications will be available Dec 1, 2021 and due on Jan 17, 2022. Training and Info session will be held on Sat, Feb 26.

Chicks will arrive in March and stay with you for 6 weeks then return to the farm to our other hens.

The Great Backyard Bird Count: Kent County Tour ~ Abbott's Mill Nature Center

Join DelNature guides on a winter birding excursion as we explore protected wildlife areas along Kent County's coastline. Tally birds using the EBird app for the Great Backyard Bird Count, an annual global birding event led by Cornell Lab of Ornithology & National Audubon Society. A group will be meeting separately at Ashland Nature Center in Hockessin to meet up with us. Pack a bagged lunch. Dress for the weather.

Spring Break Camp ~ Abbott's Mill Nature Center

Free! Tuesday Bird Walks at Middle Run ~ Middle Run Natural Area

Enjoy a bird walk at Middle Run Natural Area, a New Castle County Park where Delaware Nature Society has managed a reforestation effort for 25 years. Led by experienced birders who will help beginners identify birds, as well as look for rarer species. Meeting location is the parking lot off Possum Hollow Road, Newark. April 6 to May 25, 8am to 10am.

The Great Backyard Bird Count Weekend: Kent County Tour ~ Ashland Nature Center

Visit the Delaware Bayshore in Kent County to find and tally birds for the annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC).  Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, Little Creek Wildlife Area and other stops are some of the best birding locations in the mid-Atlantic region for seeing ducks, eagles, other raptors, and thousands of Snow Geese. We will show you how to use the ebird app as part of the GBBC so that you can contribute on your own during the next few days of this international bird event. Pack a bagged lunch. Naturalist Club ~ Virtual

Summer is here, so why not get the most out of the outdoors and become a better naturalist with Delaware Nature Society experts. The Advanced Naturalist Club summer version, features 6 zoom lectures and 2 field trips to get you primed for the outdoors this season. Expand your understanding of nature and enjoy some time in the field with fellow naturalists. Lectures will focus on migratory shorebirds, summer wildflowers, history of the Wilmington Riverfront, butterflies, Delaware's endangered birds, and invasive Snakehead fish, and a report on the health of Rocky Run. Citizen Science and Research 2021 Recap ~ Virtual

Enjoy the 2021 recap of Delaware Nature Society citizen science and research programs through four separate short presentations.  Delaware Nature Society volunteers and staff conduct research about nature on our properties, and this is a great chance to see what we learned this year.  Ian Stewart, Ornithologist, will discuss the highlights of his bird studies.  David Brown, Hawk Watcher, will share the results of the raptor migration at the Ashland Hawk Watch along with his wonderful photographs illustrating the season.  Jim White, Director of Land and Biodiversity, will share some of his research with reptiles and amphibians, as well as his own spectacular photography.  Jen Llewelyn, Master Naturalist will highlight the results of bird box monitoring program on our properties.  Be inspired to join us as a volunteer next year, or to see the results of your work if you are a current volunteer.

Winter Insects and Other Creatures ~ Virtual and Field Trip

In Winter, insects and other creatures can be out and about as a normal part of their lives. Learn about the insects that come out in winter, and the variety of life that is normally active at this time of year. In this two-part program, enjoy a lecture by Jim White, Senior Fellow for Land and Biodiversity, as he explores the small wonders of winter, from insects to amphibians. Follow up the lecture with a field trip to Ashland Nature Center for search these creatures out, and learn about their life cycles while you enjoy a winter field trip.

Eco Tour: Fallingwater and Laurel Highlands ~ DuPont Environmental Education Center

May 18 - May 20, 2022

Tour Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, which promotes harmony between man and nature through design so well integrated with its site that buildings, furnishings, and surroundings become part of a unified, interrelated composition. Visit Kentuck Knob, an example of Wright's Usonian design for the typical American family. Also includes bird-banding, Ohiopyle State Park, spectacular falls along Youghiogheny River, and birding, bogs, and botany at Laurel Summit State Park.
