Welcome to another year of Knee-highs at Abbott's Mill Nature Center. This fall we will have a learning adventure every Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:30 AM to help celebrate Delaware Nature Society's 60th Anniversary. Our theme for October and November is Food for Thought (growing food, habitats, and clean water. This season will be full of hikes, observations, and fun learning activities for kids 2-5 with a parent. Discover the wonders of nature with your little one! Take a relaxing and informative nature hike at Abbott's Mill every Wednesday afternoon from early January to mid-June. Each week we will highlight a different theme as the winter and spring seasons progress. Experienced staff members will guide the way, answering your questions and discussing interesting natural features along the trail. Topics will include, but are not limited to, winter tree identification, lichen biodiversity, bees and other important pollinators, beneficial and destructive forest insects, and dragonfly biodiversity. Immerse yourself in the grassy domain of Great Blue Herons, American Beavers, and other marsh creatures on a paddle along the tidal Christina River. No paddling experience required. This spring, Class VII* will begin the Field Trip portion of the DE Master Naturalist Training. To be sure our leaders are well prepared and ready for your attendance, we ask that you formally register here. For each field trip topic, we require that you write a formal journal entry about the experience, what was seen and done, and include extra research about your findings.

With guidance from professional land stewards and environmental educators, this program series will encourage and enable diverse communities to get more involved in local conservation efforts right in our own neighborhoods. Enhancing underutilized areas of school grounds as outdoor learning spaces for the community offers many wonderful opportunities for all. Learn how to bring folks together and get involved as we review some proven campus projects tied to the land through geography, science, and cultural experiences. There will be a separate field-experience program date related to this lecture that will be available through Delaware Nature Society.

Experience sunset serenity on the Christina River! Immerse yourself in our beautiful wetlands while watching herons, beavers, bald eagles, and more. All participants must have one previous canoeing or kayaking experience. For beginner sessions, please search our programs calendar. Equipment provided; bring water, appropriate footwear, and sunscreen. Ages 14+.
Please remember that you need to have some prior experience in a canoe or kayak -- a minimum of one hour with ability to move the boat forward, backward, and turn. If you have questions, please reach out promptly.

Enjoy a bird walk at the Dupont Environmental Education Center along the Wilmington Riverfront. Walk parts of the Jack Markell Trail and the Boardwalk Trail at the Center to look for wetland species as well as birds of the nearby thickets and forests. One of nature’s greatest spectacles takes place on the Delaware Bay in Spring…the world’s largest concentration of breeding horseshoe crabs, and the migratory birds that feed on them. Hundreds of thousands of ancient horseshoe crabs haul themselves on Bay beaches, literally covering the sand as they bury their clutches of tiny green eggs. Shorebirds migrate to the Bay from points south on their way to their arctic breeding grounds for a feeding frenzy of this nutrient-rich bonanza. This crab-bird phenomenon is a spectacular sight to see and has been taking place for millennia. We’ll get hands-on with the horseshoe crabs and conduct a “crab flipping activity” to save the ones that are stuck on the beach. Look for shorebirds, gulls, herons, eagles, and the wonderful birds of this protected area.

Fungi are one of the most under-appreciated components of the natural world in terms of their diversity and the role they play in the ecosystem. We will explore the shady woods of the beautiful private Bucktoe Creek Preserve in search of these fascinating decomposers. Walk mature forests and some wooded wetlands to see which fungi species we can find, as well as wildlife and plants along the way.

Join Herpetologist Jim White on a nocturnal exploration of Blackbird State Forest. Blackbird is an amphibian and reptile hotspot, where numerous species breed in vernal pools known as Delmarva Bays as well as surrounding woodlands. On warm Spring nights, the calls of frogs can be a mesmerizing experience as you wade into the water. Search for a dozen species of frogs, numerous salamanders including the beautiful Spotted and Marbled, and keep an eye out for turtles and snakes. This is a one-of-a-kind nature experience that you will never forget, and one you need to experience for yourself. Jim White and his wife Amy are the authors of the book, "Amphibians and Reptiles of Delmarva". Jim has led trips to this area for decades and is Delaware's authority on these animals.
