Mudbat. Timberdoodle. Woodcock. All names for a very interesting and strange bird whose "sky dance" marks the beginning of spring for many people. On late-winter evenings, American Woodcocks emerge from wet woodlands and thickets just before dark. Males puff-up full of air and "peent!" while they stand on the ground in the open. In a flash, they take wing, rising a few hundred feet in the air, while their special wingtips create a twittering sound, not unlike that of the Mourning Dove in flight. As the male descends to the very same spot on the ground, they drift back and forth like a falling leaf, chirping as they come earthward. Back on the ground, they "peent" again several times, ready for a repeat of the exciting aerial display. Meanwhile, females hide nearby, watching the performance, ready to choose their mate.
If you are lucky, you get to see this show at close range. This will be our goal of the evening. Regardless, we'll make a toast to the upcoming spring season with a glass of wine. If the weather is not conducive to a good display, we will reschedule for another night. Led by Joe Sebastiani and Ian Stewart.
Registration is required. This event is expected to sell out.
