Whip-poor-will Evening at Goat Hill ~ Ashland Nature Center

Thursday June 6

.

6:30 PM  –  10:30 PM

Take a trip to the wild and wonderful Serpentine Barrens of southwest Chester County for a chance to see the rare, nocturnal Whip-poor-will. The Barrens are a nutrient poor, rocky ecosystem that favors growth of Pitch Pine, various scrub oaks, rare wildflowers, and harbors unusual birds. The Whip-poor-will is a ground-nesting, nocturnal insectivore that nests in the barrens, and happens to be one of the very few places in the Piedmont where they do so. Walk through the Barrens in the evening to look for Yellow-breasted Chat, Prairie and Pine Warbler, Indigo Bunting, White-eyed Vireo and other nesting species. Enjoy some of the wildflowers, and perhaps come across reptiles and amphibians. As dusk settles in, listen for the odd "whip-poor-will" call of the target bird of the night. We'll try to actually see one in flight with the help of a spotlight. This is a van trip from Ashland Nature Center and the location is about a 40-minute trip, so expect to return well after dark. Led by Jeffrey Gordon. Van transportation is provided.

Pre-registration is required and ends 24hrs prior to event. Capacity is limited.

Note: We'll send you an email with preparations for the field trip the week of the program. if you don't see it, please view your spam folder.
