Red Knots, Horseshoe Crabs, and Shorebird Migration ~ Ashland Nature Center

Sunday May 26

.

8:30 AM  –  4:30 PM

The shores of Delaware Bay are famous as one of the largest migratory shorebird stopover sites in the world. Red Knots, Sanderlings, Semipalmated Sandpipers, Ruddy Turnstones and others stop here by the hundreds-of-thousands to feed on Horseshoe Crab eggs, fattening up for the final leg of their migration north to Arctic breeding grounds. Join us to see this spectacular natural phenomenon and witness the feeding frenzy of these shorebirds and the ancient ritual of Horseshoe Crab spawning on the beach. Plan to see a wide variety of shorebirds, gulls, herons, raptors, and other species on this special trip, led by Jim White, who has studied birds and nature for decades. Get close-up looks at Horseshoe Crabs and Jim explains their natural history. This is a van trip from Ashland Nature Center down the Delaware Bay coast where you'll see the most famous natural spectacle in Delaware. Also, stop at the Delaware Nature Society's Marvel Saltmarsh Preserve to observe birds of this habitat which might include Clapper Rails, Marsh Wrens, Seaside Sparrows, and possibly the dwindling Saltmarsh Sparrow.
