Serpentine Barrens and Octoraro Nursery ~ Ashland Nature Center
Visit Nottingham Park, a Serpentine Barrens in Chester County Pa, in search of rare and unusual plants and birds. Serpentine Barrens exist along the PA/MD border and are rocky, hot, dry areas that support rare and interesting plants adapted to such conditions. Nottingham Park is an excellent example of this kind of grassland savannah. Enjoy a walk with botanist Janet Ebert, and naturalist Joe Sebastiani in search of interesting plants adapted to this habitat, as well as the birds, butterflies and other wildlife that live here. After the nature hike and a picnic lunch, visit the propagation center for Octoraro Native Plant Nursery to see the process of growing local native plants destined for habitat restoration projects and retail nurseries in the area. Take home a free native container seedling to plant in your yard! Led by Joe Sebastiani and Janet Ebert. Van transportation is included.
