Travel with DelNature to explore the dynamic marine ecology of the Bay of Fundy, nestled between Maine & Nova Scotia, home to the world’s largest tides! Spend 5 days at the Fundy Marine Science Institute’s Whale Camp on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick as we enjoy whale watching, sea kayaking, tide pooling, bog hikes, pelagic birding, coastal trails, fishing villages, plankton labs, and even a lobster dinner!

Trip Overview

Begin your adventure in Bangor, Maine, where you will meet Whale Camp staff to travel to Blacks Harbor, New Brunswick, to catch an evening ferry to Grand Manan Island and settle for the night in preparation for our 5-day island adventure. 

The FMSI’s Whale Camp has served as a multi-week residential summer camp since 1984, connecting hundreds of campers to the natural wonders of the Bay of Fundy through hand-on experiences and vibrantly personal experiences. Delaware Nature Society has been offered exclusive access to their coastal campus, with Whale Camp Staff serving as our local guides, experts, and chefs!

7-day/6-night tour from Bangor, ME to Grand Manan Island, NB, August 22 – 28, 2020

Day 1 - Sat, Aug 22

Fly into Bangor International Airport, before or by 12 pm/Noon (airfare not included); Meet Whale Camp Staff to travel from Bangor to Grand Manan Ferry, New Brunswick

5:30 pm ferry from Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick; review schedule, lobster dinner orders, optional trips, casual whale watching, and dutch treat dinner; Arrive at Whale Camp/Cottages optional campus/beach walkabout, settle in for the night

Day 2 - Sun, Aug 23

8:30 am breakfast at Whale Camp; Morning sensory hike at Southern Head, Intro to Tides at Deep Cove Beach

Camp lunch in the field; Afternoon tide pooling at Red Point and free time

6:00 pm dinner at Camp; Optional evening program: interactive lab/lecture with Marine Mammal Biologist

Day 3 – Mon, Aug 24

8:30 am Camp breakfast/announcements; Morning hike to Flock of Sheep with resident Geologist

Lunch back at Camp; Afternoon whale watching

6:00 pm dinner at Camp; Optional evening Bog Discovery hike at Anchorage Provincial Park (think carnivorous plants!)

Day 4 – Tues, Aug 25

8:30 am Camp breakfast; Morning Grand Manan culture and fisheries excursion, visit local maritime museum

Camp lunch in the field; Optional afternoon sea kayaking or coastal hike

6:00 pm dinner at Camp; Optional evening mini golf & ice cream in town

Day 5 – Wed, Aug 26

8:30 am Camp breakfast; Morning birding & coastal forest ecology hike at Red Point Trail

Whale watching #2 aboard Days Catch; Camp lunch on board

Afternoon tea & scones at Harrington Cove Tea Cottage (if time), or tide pooling at Castalia Beach

6:00 pm dinner at Camp; Optional sunset hike at Southwest Head Lighthouse

Day 6 – Thurs, Aug 27

8:30 am Camp breakfast; Morning boat trip/pelagic birding

Afternoon visit to Whale & Seabird Research Station, closing activities at Whistle Lighthouse

6:00 pm Lobster Dinner at Camp; evening campfire at Camp

Day 7 – Fri, Aug 28

6:30 am depart from Whale Camp, to-go breakfast provided

7:30 am ferry to Blacks Harbour then to airport

Lodging  Trip price includes a double bunk-style room at Whale Camp, based on double-occupancy.

OR, for an additonal cost of $350 per person, share a private beach front cottage at Pa’s Place, a 3 minute walk from Whale Camp, based on double occupancy. Pricing $1,999 per person double-occupancy at Whale Camp + personal air travel; Includes travel to/from Grand Manan Island from Bangor Airport, lodging and meals (while on Grand Manan), and all tours/activities.
